The Denver Broncos and Atlanta Falcons were two of the more impressive teams in Week 1 of the NFL season. They’ll face-off against each other in Week 2 on Monday Night Football.
The Broncos looked fantastic in their regular season opener as Peyton Manning guided them to a win over the Pittsburgh Steelers. While Manning looked fantastic in his first start in nearly a year, the rest of the team looked much improved around him. People making their NFL picks saw the defense stand tall against the Steelers and the secondary looked improved with Tracy Porter now manning a starting cornerback job. Meanwhile, the front lines were able to get pressure and performed quite well even though stud D.J. Williams was out due to suspension.
As for the parts around Manning on offense, the receivers looked great as Demaryius Thomas and Eric Decker were strong while Brandon Stokley fit the slot quite well. The running game provided plenty of support too as the ageless wonder Willis McGahee averaged four yards per carry.
Their Week 2 contest won’t get any easier as the Broncos will face the Falcons, who crushed the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 1. The Broncos secondary will have to keep a good eye on Julio Jones, who appears to be emerging among the best receivers in the NFL. Denver will have to use Elvis Dumervil and Von Miller to pressure Matt Ryan because if he’s got all day to throw, the Broncos will be in for a shootout.
However, the Broncos will catch a break as the Falcons surprisingly put starting cornerback Brent Grimes on injured reserve. What appeared to be a minor calf injury turned into a season-ending injury for the Falcons franchise player.
Both teams are strong enough that Monday’s affair could be a Super Bowl preview.
