Locking up the AFC West

The Denver Broncos were able to secure the AFC West division title yesterday with their victory over the San Diego Chargers. Mathematically they could still lose the division, but realistically it is all but over. The AFC West may just be the worst division in football, but the Broncos are taking advantage of that fact and will be fighting for a playoff bye as the season progresses.

This winning streak has been led by their defense. The Denver defense was playing very soft early in the season. But now they are as stingy as anyone in the NFL. Vonn Miller was absolutely stellar yesterday, finishing the game with three sacks and two forced fumbles. Miller has had a lot of expectations forced upon him due to his great rookie season. He has been a bit inconsistent, but if he turns in any more performances similar to the one yesterday, he will be dancing his way to the Pro Bowl.

After throwing a pick six to Eric Weddle in the first quarter, Peyton Manning settled down and threw for 270 yards and three touchdowns. At this point, Manning may be the most deserving candidate for MVP. Other than Aaron Rodgers, Tom Brady, and Matt Ryan, there are not many deserving candidates and none more so than Peyton.

During the victory, Denver did suffer their most significant injury this season with Willis McGahee hurting his MCL. According to reports, he will not have to go under the knife, but it is still a serious injury and he is projected to miss 6-8 weeks with the injury. That loss will promote Ronnie Hillman and Lance Ball into more prominent roles within the offense.

Next week the Broncos travel to Kansas City to face the lowly Chiefs. Kansas City may very well be the worst team in football. Denver does not care about that. They will continue to fight and take care of business.
